Facebook started its campaign against clickbait since 2014. Sadly, it did not do much of a solution for the social media giant. Clickbait and fake news still are the plague of the internet including Facebook.

Today, Facebook released a new version of News Feed or rather updated the algorithm of its News Feed. The idea is to filter those shared posts that link to outside websites (and sometimes pages from Facebook itself) that contain low-quality content.

Almost everybody who has used the internet for quite some time had certainly encountered at least one of fake news. Those over-sensationalized titles that make people curious are everywhere. And when they click on it, they realize that none of what they imagined was there. The picture was either a lie, fake or simply misleading. What’s even worse is that the quality of content is really useless if not disappointing.

The Fight Against Clickbait

Last year, Google, Amazon, and Facebook made a move to finally put a stop to click bait and other sorts of spams. They all agreed on one thing—they will use their algorithms to identify those types of content as much as possible.

Google used its SEO rules and a part of its AI algorithm. Amazon used Alexa, and Facebook developed its own AI (FastText) and shared its algorithm as well. All of them contributed for the sole purpose of improving its system to filter out click bait and other sorts of spam.

Facebook Improved Algorithm

The social media giant has been an advocate of freedom of expression and creating a harmonious environment within its platform. All while still respecting the rights of other users to express themselves. So what could Facebook do to push through with its anti-clickbait campaign without having to violate any of its user’s right?—Facebook updated its algorithm and made some huge tweaks.

The improvement to its algorithm is to identify users who post more than 50 times a day. A consistent post with that much number using the same content over again is an indication of spam.

How The Algorithm Works

A normal user typically posts 5-20 times a day. Anything beyond that number could trigger Facebook algorithm and will check the content of the post. This will lead to the distribution of the content being cut down on the network.

There is also the possibility that the user is a bot that posts automatically. That is why any user should watch the quantity of their post so as not to be mistaken as one.

The algorithm is also said to target pages with products and services that need to be shared as much as possible. So the normal users will not be affected by these changes. The changes will only happen with how the News Feed will behave in the next days.

For those posts that will be detected with an abnormal amount of activity, it will be buried below the News Feed. This will make them harder to find by the users.

The Internet Without Spam

Hopefully, these changes will benefit all its users. It’s high time that these kinds of misinformation stop. If clickbait prevails, the future will surely fall into a more chaotic stage defined by people who spread over-sensationalized ideas and wrong views in morality.
